What each game is
Broken Oath (Steam app 5452900) is a Windows action RPG from Crater Studios, set in the Dwarven Realms universe. It is in public playtest through app 5461470, live since 30 October 2026. Early Access is announced but undated; the store estimates six to twelve months. The pitch is six classes, skill gems with support gems that change how a skill behaves, a passive tree with notables and keystones, and a Forge that uses rune stones found in each land. Runs take place in Ruptures: randomised maps with weather, time of day, eight danger bands and Guardians at the end.
Grim Dawn is a finished Windows action RPG from Crate Entertainment, released on 25 February 2016. Ten masteries pair into 45 dual-class combinations, and a constellation-based Devotion tree sits on top. Single-player runs offline, and online or LAN co-op takes up to four players. Three expansions exist; Fangs of Asterkarn, the final one, arrived on 23 July 2026.
The build layer
Grim Dawn's build layer is about coupling. You choose a first mastery at level 2 and a second at level 10, and the game does not let you max both, so every character is a trade. Devotion adds a second map: restoring shrines grants points, constellations have affinity requirements, and their celestial powers bind to specific skills. Item-granted skills and item modifiers sit on top, which is why gear can change a build rather than only raise its numbers. Crafting runs alongside the drop chase: rare crafted keys open roguelike dungeons, while later expansions add set transmutation and affix transmutation — levers over drop luck, not a player economy.
Broken Oath's build layer is about links. Skills are gems, and support gems change behaviour rather than only adding damage; the store's own examples are a Cyclone that fires Ember Bolts while channelling, a burning legion, and arrows raining in a chosen element. A passive tree supplies notables and keystones, while Blessings and Curses add a second layer — Vows for power, Woe on a pack, marking the strong for death. The Forge is the crafting answer: rune stones are found per land, recipes are learned, and Edda Ironhand crafts fixed modifiers. The recipes visible in official screenshots are deterministic stat additions, not random rolls.
The philosophies differ. Grim Dawn's depth comes from stacking mastery, Devotion and item modifiers on one character, with an item pool that has had years of additions. Broken Oath's depth is meant to come from gem interactions, a more legible pitch but a harder one to verify from a playtest. One early look compared the Forge to Last Epoch's deterministic crafting; that is a creator's comparison, not a studio claim.
The endgame and the time ask
Grim Dawn spreads its endgame across separate activities: Crucible waves, the Shattered Realm's scaling shards, key-gated roguelike dungeons where teleporting out is disabled, Nemesis and super bosses, and Ascendant Mode, which turns the campaign into a challenge for finished characters. There are no official seasons and no wipes; characters persist across patches. Because single-player is offline and saves are local, the loop is self-directed: pick a target, farm it, then push the character further or start another.
A Grim Dawn session is a plan with combat attached. You decide whether the next stretch goes to Shattered Realm shards, a roguelike key or Crucible waves, and the answer depends on which slot the build is missing. Progress is measured in gear and faction standing rather than a season pass, so there is no expiry date on the work.
Broken Oath's loop is Ruptures. The observed panel shows a run timer, a small number of lives, checkpoints, rares remaining and distance-marked objectives, with a Guardian waiting at the end. That reads as a bounded run rather than an open farming route, and the store promises a deeper endgame during Early Access. The playtest keeps online and offline characters apart; a rebuild on 5 November reset online heroes and left offline characters untouched. Crater Studios has not announced a season structure.
Where Broken Oath has to prove itself
Grim Dawn sets a specific bar: a finished game, playable offline, with ten masteries and several endgame activities. Broken Oath does not have to match all of it at launch, but these are the open questions.
- Gem links beyond the campaign. The promise is behaviour change, not bigger numbers. Alpha showcases are one-patch snapshots, so the question is whether the links stay interesting once the campaign is over.
- The Forge at scale. Fixed stat crafts are a good start; whether the system holds as the item pool and recipe tiers grow is unproven.
- Endgame breadth. Ruptures and Guardians are one activity. Grim Dawn's answer is several, and Broken Oath has promised a deeper endgame without detailing it.
- Controller and Deck support. Support is in progress, with full controller and Steam Deck compatibility promised for Early Access.
- Offline durability. Offline characters exist, but the playtest has already reset online characters once, and save handling has not been documented.
- Price and release. Neither is announced, so value cannot be judged yet.
None of these are failures. They are questions a playtest has not answered, and the reason this page does not score either game.
Who should play which
Pick Broken Oath if…
- You want to watch a build system develop and do not mind resets, missing features or an undated release.
- You care more about support gems changing what a skill does than about another layer of damage stats.
- You like run-based endgame: enter a Rupture, clear objectives, kill the Guardian, leave.
- You are happy to request playtest access and give feedback on an alpha.
- You would rather test six classes now than wait for a finished game.
Pick Grim Dawn if…
- You want a complete game tonight, with no release date to wait for.
- Offline single-player and local saves matter to you.
- You like planning one character across two masteries and a Devotion map.
- You want several endgame activities to choose between, not a single loop.
- You prefer buy-once pricing without a season pass.
The honest verdict
Grim Dawn is the known quantity. It is finished, it runs offline, and its build space — ten masteries, 45 combinations, Devotion, item modifiers — has had years of patches behind it. The cost is a 2016 engine, stiff animation and an endgame shaped like a grind rather than an event.
Broken Oath is the unknown. Its pitch is specific enough to evaluate — gem links, Ruptures, a deterministic Forge — but the game is an undated playtest whose price has not been announced, and every system on its side of the table is still moving.
If you want a complete offline ARPG to play tonight and you can live with dated presentation, choose Grim Dawn. If you have already played it and want to watch a six-class alpha develop, request playtest access and treat it as a test bed, not a home. If you need a release date and a price before you commit, wait for Broken Oath's Early Access announcement.
