The Dwarven Realms: what the oath broke

Broken Oath is part of the Dwarven Realms universe. That sentence is doing a lot of work: it tells you there is a larger world, a shared history and a reason the Ruptures matter. It does not tell you the story. Here is the line between the two.

What a Rupture is

A Rupture is both a place and a system. In the fiction, it is a tear in the lands. In play, it is a randomised map with weather, time of day, monsters, objectives and a Guardian. The store never separates the two, which is deliberate: the mechanic is the lore.

That design choice matters for how you read the game. A Rupture is not a stable dungeon you clear once. It is a wound that reopens differently every time. The Dwarven Realms are not a backdrop; they are the thing being repeatedly broken.

The other Dwarven Realms

Dwarven Realms is not only a setting label; it is Crater Studios’ first game. It entered Early Access on Steam on 27 September 2024 and has 2,861 user reviews at the time of checking. Its store text already uses the phrase “chaotic ruptures” and describes seasonal leaderboards.

The dwarven question

The universe is called the Dwarven Realms, but the six playable classes are Warrior, Mage, Ranger, Samurai, Paladin and Necromancer. None is explicitly a dwarf. The store does not explain whether the player characters are dwarves, outsiders, descendants or something else.

The oath

“An oath was broken” is the first line of the store description and the title of the game. It is not explained. We do not know who swore it, what it promised, who broke it, or whether the player is trying to restore it or exploit it.

The systems offer a thematic echo: Vows grant power, Woe curses a pack, and the HUD has an Oath button. Whether the story’s oath is the same kind of oath as the player’s Vow is unknown. It is the most interesting unanswered question in the game.
